Typical Age for the First Tooth Loss

If you’re here, there’s a good chance you’re preparing to take on the role of Tooth Fairy, and your child hasn’t lost that first tooth just yet. Don’t worry, the timeline for that first tooth can vary. More often than not, children lose their first tooth around the age of six. Some might be as early as four-and-a-half, while others might wait until they are seven or eight. 

The first tooth lost is typically one of the lower front teeth, or the central incisors. For those who like charts, here’s a good one you can save! Keep in mind that the timelines will be just a little different for every child. 

What Affects the Timing

If the timeline of losing teeth can vary so much, what can change the timing? Of course, genetics and family history can have an influence on when your child’s teeth fall out. If you lost the majority of your baby teeth around the age of eight, your child very well might do the same thing.

The timeline can vary based on your child’s habits as well. If they have a habit of sucking their thumb, this can put unnecessary pressure on the palate and surrounding teeth. If your child had any injuries that affected their teeth, this can also cause them to lose them a little earlier. 

Also, if there is severe decay involved, this will also impact the timeline. Sometimes, a little extra help might be needed to remove these teeth before the decay spreads to the neighboring teeth.

What to Expect During the Process of Losing a Tooth

When to Call the Dentist
