Time for the beautiful fall weather! 

After a Texas summer, that first crisp breeze of fall will likely bring a smile to your face. It’s been a hot one, but it’s finally time to get out of the A/C and enjoy the beautiful weather with the family. What better way to do that than to explore the surrounding areas? Sure, you can stick close to home and see what Austin has to offer, but there’s something special about a day trip. So pack up those PB&J sandwiches for the kids, get buckled in, and let’s get exploring!

Fredericksburg

Located 75 miles west of Austin, Fredericksburg is sure to capture your heart. The streets are lined with gorgeous architecture, reminiscent of the German heritage that permeates around the town. If you’re getting hungry, there are plenty of farm-to-table options to choose from. Whether you want to grab some classic Texas BBQ or sample some of the German cuisine (some of them even have a brewery attached!), there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

The main street of Fredericksburg is full of small, locally owned shops. Whether you prefer to window shop or get a head-start on your Christmas list, your inner shopper will have a blast exploring downtown! If you’d prefer to stick to the outdoors, look no further than Enchanted Rock. You can take the kids on a hike or set up some tents for an eventful weekend of camping. It is advised to book your trip in advance, as reservations tend to book up quickly in the busier months. So don’t forget to check their website before you get everyone packed into the car.

Wimberley

When you look up Wimberley, TX, you’re likely to see gorgeous, watery views, like lagoons and parks. One of the most popular attractions is the Blue Hole Regional Park. This gorgeous area includes your dream swimming hole, complete with rope swings, as well as many areas to relax in the cool fall breeze. Be sure to check out their website and register if you want to swim, but the other activities are free for all visitors to enjoy!

From March to December, Wimberley hosts their very own market days on the first Saturday of every month. It’s not uncommon for people to plan an entire day just for this event! So come on out to enjoy the beautiful trees and see what you can find in the market. 

Of course, if you’re just wanting a peaceful drive to enjoy the red and gold leaves while they last, the scenic drives through Wimberley can’t be beat! While you’re at it, be sure to stop by one of the many local eateries to ensure your day trip is perfect. 

Lockhart

It’s undeniable that if you want some good BBQ, you’ve got to come to Texas. In fact, some might say you have to visit Lockhart. The Senate actually named it the barbeque capital of Texas. So if you want some unbelievably good BBQ, take the trip over to Lockhart and see what all the fuss is about. There’s one thing for sure: you won’t leave hungry.

If enticing BBQ isn’t enough to get your family in the car, plan a trip to Lockhart State Park. Filled with miles of tree-lined trails, this beautiful park will make you fall in love with the outdoors all over again. You can fish, get into some geocaching, or lounge by the water at Clear Fork Creek.

Dripping Springs

Ready to explore a beautiful, emerald-green, natural swimming hole? Hamilton Pool Preserve might just be the perfect place for you. It’s a short, 0.25-mile walk to the pool itself, but once you’re there, you’re sure to be taken in by how beautiful it is. Reservations are required to enter the preserve, so be sure to check ahead!

Dripping Springs is also known for its local breweries. No matter what kind of beer you’ve been craving, it’s likely close by. While you’re in town, be sure to check out any local festivals and other outdoor activities. You might be surprised by how active this little town truly is.

Marble Falls

If your family loves a good boating adventure, look no further than Lake Marble Falls. This gorgeous lake is actually one of the recommended stops on the Bluebonnet Trail and is a lovely area for a fun day outdoors.

If the kids are looking for something a little different, Sweet Berry Farm reopens its doors during fall for all sorts of seasonal fun. Take a hayride with the whole family, stuff a scarecrow, or try your hand at the great Texas Maze.
