8 Key Similarities and Differences Between Traditional Braces and Invisalign

Traditional braces or Invisalign

Invisalign or Braces?

Traditional braces used to be the only option available for many common orthodontic issues. Today, Invisalign provides effective treatment for a wide range of orthodontic cases. Choosing traditional braces or Invisalign comes down to a variety of factors, as both options have specific benefits.

If you are considering braces or Invisalign, consider the following eight key similarities and differences between these common treatments.

1. Both braces and Invisalign are options for most cases.

The first thing you should know when you’re considering traditional braces or Invisalign is that there is a huge overlap in the cases they can treat. Almost all orthodontic cases can achieve the same level of results with either braces or Invisalign, with the patient’s personal preference often being the deciding factor.

Invisalign clear aligners can straighten teeth and treat both Class I and Class II malocclusions. This includes many cases of:

  • Overbite
  • Crossbite
  • Gaps
  • Open bite
  • Crowding
  • Some cases of underbite

Every patient is unique, so you’ll need to speak with your dentist to find out which option suits your needs best.

2. Costs are generally comparable for each option.

When looking into any dental or orthodontic treatment, the cost is one of the top considerations for most patients. Straightening your teeth and resolving bite issues is well worth the investment, as you’ll save in the long run by preventing lasting damage to your teeth.

Invisalign and traditional braces are roughly comparable in terms of cost. There are many individual factors in each case, but similar issues generally have comparable pricing for both Invisalign and traditional braces. You may also have to take a close look at your insurance terms to determine whether they favor one option over the other.

3. You’ll have check-ins with your dentist in either case.

If you’ve already had braces at some point in your life, you likely have unpleasant memories of wire tightening. These routine appointments to adjust the archwire of your braces over the course of the treatment can be uncomfortable and inconvenient and something you’d like to avoid.

With Invisalign, you receive all of your clear aligners at the start of treatment, and you won’t require wire tightening. But you’ll still have a few routine appointments over the course of treatment so your dentist can evaluate your progress to determine whether treatment is going as planned.

4. Some specific cases call for traditional braces.

While Invisalign is a choice in most cases, sometimes traditional braces are the only option. Class III malocclusions are generally unsuitable for treatment with Invisalign due to lower jaw position.

There are other cases that might be too complex for Invisalign as well. The only way to know for sure is for your dentist to carry out an evaluation of your teeth and jaw to find the best treatment option for you.

5. Invisalign is better suited for teens and adults.

Invisalign clear aligners are removable. This can be a great benefit, but it also means that the treatment isn’t ideal for children.

Invisalign treatment for adults and teens relies on the patient having the responsibility to keep their aligners in for at least 22 hours each day. Invisalign Teen even features markings at the back of the aligners that fade when worn, so parents can verify they’ve been wearing them.

6. Invisalign provides a more comfortable experience.

Traditional braces can be very uncomfortable. There is always the risk of the inside of your mouth rubbing against the metal brackets, which can lead to soreness and even bleeding.

Invisalign clear aligners are completely smooth, meaning there’s no risk of irritation. They also deliver a more even pressure during treatment, which many patients find more comfortable than braces.

7. Your treatment is practically invisible with Invisalign.

Braces are instantly noticeable when you smile. This has played a big role in dissuading patients from seeking adult orthodontics in the past. With Invisalign, you don’t have this problem.

Invisalign clear plastic aligners are transparent and conform to the contours of your smile. You don’t have to worry about someone noticing them at a glance, as they’re only visible under close inspection.

8. Invisalign aligners are removable.

While you have to keep your aligners in for at least 22 hours each day, they are removable at certain times. You remove them when it’s time to eat, so you don’t have any dietary restrictions, as you would with braces. And you can remove them as needed for special occasions, such as a public speaking event.

This also makes taking care of your teeth easier. Instead of using special tools to work around braces, you simply remove your aligners to brush your teeth. You’ll also have to clean the aligners, but that’s a quick and easy task.
